Rottnest ferry tips

The crossing is short. The rules around it are not, and most bad Rottnest days start at the wharf, not on the island.

Ferries to Rottnest carried more than 823,000 visitors in 2023-24, a record (WA Government). The operators run tight schedules to move that many people, and Rottnest Express says plainly that it can't delay a ferry for late passengers.

Here is what to know before you leave for the wharf: when to book, when to arrive, what you can carry and what happens when things go wrong.

The quick answer

Book ahead for summer, weekends and school holidays. Arrive 30 minutes before departure; check-in or boarding cut-offs are strict, and a missed Rottnest Express ferry is charged in full. You can bring your own food, but not drink your own alcohol on board or in public on the island. Bikes, boards and big bags need pre-booking. If the weather cancels a sailing, the operator rebooks or credits you, and SeaLink offers a refund.

Do I need to book the Rottnest ferry in advance?

For summer, weekends, school holidays and Easter, yes. Popular sailings sell out. On a quiet weekday outside the holidays you can often book the day before.

SeaLink says popular departure times can sell out, especially over summer, weekends and holidays (SeaLink FAQ). The RIA adds the school holidays and Easter (RIA), and Rottnest Express recommends booking ahead from December to February and on weekends. Booking ahead also gets you the cheaper fares; see cheaper ferry tickets.

Book the add-ons early too. Spaces for your own bike can sell out, and island accommodation opens up to 9 months ahead and books fast.

How early should I arrive for Rottnest Express?

At least 30 minutes before departure, and 30 to 40 minutes if you are parking at B Shed. With a QR ticket and no bags you can go straight to the gate, but boarding closes 5 minutes before.

What happens if you miss your Rottnest ferry?

You usually lose the fare. Rottnest Express charges a no-show in full and doesn't hold ferries; SeaLink tickets are non-refundable and late arrivals can be refused.

Rottnest Express's terms are blunt: "we are unable to delay ferries for passengers who are not ready to board", and unused services aren't refunded, late arrival included (Rottnest Express terms). SeaLink has no separate missed-ferry clause, but tickets are non-refundable and passengers who miss the check-in or boarding cut-offs can be turned away (SeaLink terms).

What you can do: change your booking before it is too late. Rottnest Express allows changes up to 1 hour before departure, and SeaLink up to 60 minutes before, subject to seats and any fare difference. That applies to the boat home too, so if you're running late on the island, call before the cut-off. GetYourGuide's free cancellation works only before the deadline on your listing (24 hours or 2 days before), not at the gate.

Can I take luggage on the Rottnest ferry?

Yes. Rottnest Express allows two carry-on items and SeaLink one; bigger bags up to 22 kg travel as checked luggage for a small fee and can be delivered to your accommodation.

  • Carry-on size: 600 x 400 x 300 mm on both main operators. SeaLink allows nothing in the aisles or wheelchair spaces.
  • Checked bags: up to 22 kg and 800 x 500 x 400 mm with Rottnest Express (luggage rules). SeaLink delivers checked bags and eskies to island accommodation 2 to 3 hours after arrival.
  • Hillarys: Rottnest Fast Ferries needs luggage labels, arranged ahead or at the ticket office.
  • Prams: SeaLink asks you to pre-book them as additional items, and freight may carry a fee (SeaLink FAQ).

Day-trippers rarely need more than a backpack. If you have checked bags, remember Rottnest Express closes boarding 10 minutes before departure instead of 5.

Can you take a bike on the Rottnest ferry?

Yes, if you pre-book a space and pay a freight charge. Bikes have size limits, tandems aren't carried, and e-bike batteries go in your hand luggage.

SeaLink accepts bikes up to 1.3 m high, 1.8 m long, 45 cm wide and 22 kg, with tyres up to 6 cm. No tandems. For e-bikes, remove the battery and carry it in your hand luggage (SeaLink FAQ). Rottnest Express warns that bike spaces can sell out, and Rottnest Fast Ferries charges freight for bikes, boards and kayaks.

Most visitors hire instead. A package has the bike waiting on the island, with a helmet, which WA law requires: see SeaLink's ferry and bike and Rottnest Express's ferry and bike.

Can you take food to Rottnest Island?

Yes, food and soft drinks are fine. Alcohol is the problem: you can't drink your own on the ferry, and on the island you can only drink at licensed venues.

The RIA and SeaLink both confirm you can bring your own food and drinks. Both main ferries are licensed: Rottnest Express doesn't allow you to drink your own alcohol on board, and SeaLink only carries alcohol you didn't buy on board in checked bags. On the island, drinking on beaches, jetties and streets can lead to a fine or removal (RIA guidelines). Overnight guests should check their accommodation's rules.

Pets can't come at all: no domestic animals, including dogs, are allowed on the island. Guide and assistance dogs need a ranger's approval first. And the quokkas get none of your lunch.

Is the Rottnest ferry rough, and what helps with seasickness?

It can be. The crossing is open ocean and gets choppy at times. Sit in the middle of the boat, watch the horizon, and if you're prone to it, take a remedy before you board.

Rottnest Fast Ferries advises a seat in the middle of the ferry with your eyes on the horizon (Rottnest Fast Ferries). Fresh air helps too, if the boat has an open deck, and guests mention sitting outside on the return trip when the water was choppy. Ask a pharmacist about tablets the day before: most work best taken ahead of time.

On a windy day, the Perth route spends most of its time on the sheltered Swan River, and the Fremantle crossing is the shortest stretch of open water at about 30 minutes.

Do Rottnest ferries get cancelled for bad weather?

Sometimes, when strong winds are forecast. SeaLink then offers a full refund or a credit; Rottnest Express offers a new date or a credit note.

SeaLink's terms say that if it cancels a sailing for safety, weather or operational reasons, you choose a full refund or a credit, and credits last 12 months and can pass to family and friends (SeaLink terms). Perth sailings can be swapped for a coach to Fremantle when the weather or high tides affect the river. Rottnest Express treats bad weather as force majeure: you can reschedule or take a credit note, and a cash refund may be offered less some costs (Rottnest Express terms).

Check your email and the operator's website on the morning you travel. If you booked through GetYourGuide and the weather looks grim, its free cancellation window may be the cleaner exit; it closes 24 hours or 2 days before, depending on the listing.
